Indianapolis 500-winning race engineer Eric Cowdin has departed Chip Ganassi Racing.

Cowdin (pictured above left with Scott Harner and Charlie Kimball in 2017) came to prominence as Tony Kanaan’s race engineer at the Tasman Motorsport Indy Lights team in 1996, where he and the Brazilian went on to win the title in 1997 before moving to the CART IndyCar Series. Although Cowdin and Kanaan worked for a variety of teams in the years that followed, they reunited at KVSH Racing and went to victory lane at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2013.

The relationship continued more recently in 2021 when Cowdin engineered Jimmie Johnson and Kanaan in the shared No. 48 Honda before looking after Johnson during his full-season campaign in 2022.
In 2023, Cowdin led Marcus Armstrong to IndyCar Rookie of the Year honors in the No. 11 Honda and ran the New Zealander, who is returning in a full-time capacity, in his maiden oval test in September before departing the program.

Reached for comment, the Ganassi team declined to discuss the matter and calls to Cowdin and Ed Carpenter Racing, where he is said to be headed, went unreturned.
